Northeast Initiatives and State Networks
ICLEI's Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Initiatives
- Clean School Bus Project
The
Northeast and Mid-Atlantic RCC is working with five local governments
in the Northeast: Hamden, CT; Brattleboro, VT; Cambridge, MA;
Springfield, MA; and Syracuse, NY, to upgrade their area diesel school
buses with new technologies and cleaner-burning fuels. The efforts of
these municipalities will help clean the air, protect children’s
health, and reduce global warming pollution. Over the course of this
grant, ICLEI will produce a Clean School Bus Toolkit to provide the
resources, guidance and educational outreach materials local
governments will need to retrofit their area school buses with
pollution control devices, use cleaner-burning fuels, and reduce idling
by their bus drivers on and around school grounds. This project is
graciously funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Coming
soon: ICLEI case studies, as well as toolkits on school-bus biodiesel, anti-iding, and
retrofits. For
more information, contact Courtney Forrester or view the EPA Clean School Bus USA page. - CleanAir CABS
ICLEI is working with the City of
Boston to implement the CleanAir CABS project to promote the adoption
of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles as taxi cabs to replace the
existing fleet. By converting traditional cabs to “clean” cabs and
providing educational and financial resources to cab owners and
drivers, ICLEI will help Boston cut global warming and air pollution
and reduce the burden of fuel cost and occupational health hazards. - New England Cities Project
The
New England Cities Project is a comprehensive program designed to
accelerate the implementation of municipal activities which generate
reductions in overall energy use, greenhouse gas, and air pollutant
emissions. The Project, generously sponsored by the Kendall Foundation,
will assist approximately ten ICLEI member municipalities in New
England in implementing climate mitigation strategies by developing
targeted technical assistance guides that will facilitate the
implementation of activities that significantly reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. The Project will explore strategies for analyzing existing
climate policies as well as methods for creating and implementing new
policies. At the conclusion of the Project, case studies, technical
toolkits, and a quantification guide will be created to detail the
successes, obstacles, and opportunities for other municipalities to
undertake similar initiatives. For more information, please contact Missy Stults. - Transportation and Climate Change Project
Since 2005, through the generous support of the Surdna Foundation, ICLEI has worked with five local governments in the Northeast region to conduct greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions inventories for their transportation sectors, and in developing action plans that reduce total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) through land use planning and smart growth techniques. Now in Phase II, the Project is currently focusing on implementation of the action plans and in addressing issues that were identified by the local governments as primary barriers to implementation. For more information and resources from the Project, please visit the Project's webpage or contact Angela Vincent.
State Networks in the Region
- Massachusetts CCP® Network
The longest running state
network within ICLEI's Cities for Climate Protection Campaign, still
meets on a quarterly basis and maintains a Massachusetts email group to
discuss common challenges and opportunities, collaborate on ways to
work with the state government, and alert each other to upcoming events
and training. For more information, please contact Missy Stults. - Maryland Municipal Climate Protection Network
Launched
in the fall of 2006, this ambitious group of committed municipalities
has a wealth of experience and knowledge with climate protection. In
collaboration with ICLEI, EPA, and various state-wide stakeholders,
these municipalities are sharing their expertise and resources, working
to spread and intensify climate protection across the state. For more
information, please contact Angela Vincent. - Virginia Municipal Climate Protection Network
The
newest of the Northeast’s state networks, this collection of
municipalities is quickly growing to include local governments across
the state, working to support each other as they lead their state
venturing into the arena of climate protection. For more information,
please contact Angela Vincent.
