Getting Started

Page Title Image - General Use

There is no single path for local governments embarking on climate protection and sustainabililty journeys. Yet there are several key components that will help lay the groundwork for progress, solutions and success throughout your community.

Here are some tips for Getting Started:

Make a Formal Commitment

One of the first steps a local government can take towards addressing global warming is to pass a local resolution that affirms that commitment. Passing a resolution highlights the importance elected officials place on climate change and serves as another opportunity to educate the public and local government staff while securing a path towards action and implementation far into the future.

Identify a Climate Champion

With the concern for global warming growing throughout the general population, it is not difficult to find people that believe we all need to start taking action to reduce emissions. In hundreds of communities across the country, mayors and other local elected officials have embraced climate protection and sustainability as a local priority and, in doing so, raised awareness and driven action.

Create a Climate Action Team

To ensure long-term success, climate protection and sustainability initiatives must be developed and promoted through a multi-stakeholder climate action team. Successful teams include representatives from the municipal, business, industrial, residential, and the institutional sectors. Additionally, utilities, non profits, and state, regional, and federal agencies may lend expertise to a local climate action team.
