Berkeley, December 2005—With the leadership of Berkeley (CA) Mayor Tom Bates, 14
cities in Alameda County have signed a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
in the Bay Area. Part of this commitment includes developing an action plan for moving
forward in the fight against global warming.
ICLEI, in partnership with Mayor Tom Bates and KyotoUSA, created a presentation for
the mayors on the impact of climate change in the Bay Area. Options for moving forward
were discussed and cities were shown how they can develop their own local action plans
to meet goals in greenhouse gas reductions.
Abby Young, ICLEI-USA’s director of strategic planning, says, “Cities in the Bay Area
and Alameda County continue to provide leadership to the state and the country by
moving forward on this timely issue.”
Two of Alameda County’s largest cities, Berkeley and Oakland, are ICLEI members.
